New Historical Website for The Halls Launched

We are excited to announce that a new web-based guide to the history of our buildings has now been launched.

The Norwich Blackfriars' Online - www.norwichblackfriars.co.uk - is a comprehensive guide to The Halls featuring 3D computer models of the friary as well as plans, drawings and maps.

The project was created by the Virtual Past team at the University of East Anglia (UEA) for Norwich Heritage Economic and Regeneration Trust (HEART) with funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Harry Watson Bursary. Generous support was also provided by the Norfolk County Record Office.

Michael Loveday, Chief Executive of Norwich HEART, said: “The Norwich Blackfriars Online site is a hugely valuable new resource making a massive amount of historical information about the buildings widely available for the first time. By combining modern technology and history in an innovative way we are able to tell the fascinating story of The Halls to new audiences – showing once again that heritage isn’t dull or stuffy.”

Professor Carole Rawcliffe at UEA, who managed the project, said: “It is important for academics to make their research more widely available to the public in a lively and accessible format that does justice to our fine city. Norwich boasts an unrivalled combination of historic buildings and archives, yet many of these outstanding resources remain unexplored. The work of our Virtual Past team aims to bring them alive and to promote our heritage.”

The Norwich Blackfriars Online is the second of a planned series of historic websites on each of the Norwich 12 buildings, following the first which was launched in 2008 and features the Great Hospital. Future websites are therefore planned for Norwich Castle, Norwich Cathedral, The Guildhall, Dragon Hall, The Assembly House, St James Mill, St John’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, Surrey House, City Hall and The Forum.

Plans For Transforming The Halls

Ambitious plans are underway to invest in The Halls' future as a multi-functional arts, concert and conference facility for the city and beyond. If the work goes ahead then the complex will also act as a hub for a range of nearby cultural facilities and the story of these iconic buildings will be told to new generations of audiences and visitors.

If funding allows, the work could begin in early 2011. For further information please visit the Norwich HEART website and the section devoted to Regenerating The Halls.
