Saturday 12th March - An Audience with Rick Wakeman

The one-man show “An Evening With Rick Wakeman” pretty much came about by accident. Quite simply, his gear didn’t arrive for a show and all there was available was a piano. The audience were given the choice of their money back or an evening with Rick performing on the piano and telling ludicrously ridiculous and funny anecdotes. Only three people took up the offer of their money back, and “An Evening With Rick Wakeman” was born.

This year’s opening concert sees the Festival Chorus reunited with the English Chamber Orchestra and conductor David Parry, following their acclaimed performance at NNF10.

Together with an outstanding line-up of soloists they will perform Rossini’s operaticStabat Mater, a powerful work of astonishing beauty and lyricism. In addition to works by Beethoven and Mozart, tonight’s concert includes John Tavener’s Little Ceremonial, an intensely beautiful and reflective piece written in 2009.

A spellbinding concert featuring the unique artistry of two musicians: Norwegian jazz trumpeter Arve Henriksen, whose soulful music reflects the landscapes of the North, merging collages and delicate sound-palettes, and Joanna MacGregor, whose virtuosity is showcased in James MacMillan’s sensationally wild, Celtic-inspired piano concerto. The programme also includes new arrangements from Arve’s acclaimed ECM album Cartography, as well as Joanna’s orchestral work inspired by the poetic blues and gospel of the deep south.
