Friday 1st January - Viennese New Years Day Concert

Kick-off the New Year with this fabulous concert of Viennese favourites from the Norwich Pops Orchestra conducted by their dynamic maestro Geoff Davidson and joined by international singing star Elizabeth Watts.

Join Norwich Pops in St Andrew’s Hall on the 1st January as they recreate the magic and charm of the Vienna New Year’s Day concert. This year they are joined by the wonderful young soprano Elizabeth Watts. Originally from Norwich, Elizabeth is currently taking the singing world by storm, and this will be a wonderful opportunity to see her perform in Norwich.

This will be the fourth annual New Years Day Concert by the Pops Orchestra in Norwich and each year it has gained in popularity. It makes a great start to the New Year and can be a great opportunity to get the family together and do something a bit different on New Year’s Day.

Performances at 1pm and 4pm.

Circus Starr occupies a unique position in British circus by raising thousands of pounds for local charities from the advance sales of tickets to local businesses.

Their magical mix of top-flight acrobatics, breathtaking balancing and non-stop comedy performs to audiences of all ages in more than 75 towns and cities in England, Scotland and Wales each year.

They work with over 70 local charities in the UK each year, in particular raising funds for hospices and hospitals.

They enjoy the support of over 23,000 companies across the UK who assist Circus Starr to raise over £100,000 a year for local charities.

They also donate over 75,000 tickets per year to underprivileged and disabled children and other local community groups who otherwise wouldn’t get the chance to see a circus show.

Thursday 18th February - Sainsbury Institute, Japanese Culture Lecture

Every Third Thursday of the month, the Sainsbury Institute hosts a lecture on a topic related to the art and culture of Japan. Talks begin at 6pm (50-minute lecture followed by refreshments). Speakers are all specialists in their field and the talks are intended to be accessible to those with no prior knowledge of Japanese history.

Once again we are proud to host the Norfolk County Music Festival and CASMA events for local schools. We hope all the children taking part take away great memories of singing and playing instruments in our grand halls.

Tuesday 2nd to Friday 5th March - Norfolk County Music Festival

Members of public, friends and family are welcome to watch any of the classes. Programmes for a day cost £1.50 or £2. Programmes that entitle purchaser to all classes during the Festival coast £4.50. Other classes are held at The Assembly House (mainly Piano), URC Princes Street Norwich and CNS school. There are also venues in Kings Lynn and Thetford. The programme includes Bach’s Brandenburg no.3 for Strings, Borodin’s lyrical Symphony no.2 and Shostakovich ‘Festive Overture’ with its exciting Brass fanfares and fast String passages. There will also be a performance of the Mexican composer Arturo Marquez’ Danzon No.2. This piece shot to popularity after the performance in the 2007 proms by the acclaimed Simon Bolivar orchestra from Venezuela.

The Norfolk County Youth Orchestra is a full symphony orchestra that brings together talented musicians living in Norfolk, between the ages of 12 and 19. The repertoire studied is varied, ranging from standard orchestral repertoire to contemporary pieces.

While Vivaldi's depictions of the four seasons are among the best-known works of the baroque period, less familiar are the Italian sonnets he wrote to introduce the concertos. Originally read before each concerto was performed, the sonnets were intended to 'explain the music more easily'. Renowned worldwide for its energised, passionate performances of baroque music, the Academy of Ancient Music is joined by radiant soprano Elin Manahan Thomas to recreate this harmonious celebration of nature.
