Wednesday 9th May - NNF Berlin Symphony Orchestra

Julian Lloyd Webber cello
Alexander Liebreich conductor

Weber Overture, Der Freischütz
Haydn Cello Concerto in C major
Britten Serenata & Marcia from Cello Suite No.1
Beethoven Coriolan Overture
Brahms Symphony No.1

The 2012 Festival opens on a glittering note with a visit by one of Europe’s most distinguished orchestras. The Berlin Symphony Orchestra is joined by the cellist Julian Lloyd Webber for a concert of contrasts: the programme ranges from 18th-century poise to 20th-century intimacy, encompassing the expansive vision of two great symphonic masters and a Romantic visionary along the way.

Der Freischütz and Coriolan overtures are galvanising and full of drama, a satisfying contrast to Haydn’s gossamer scoring. And the grandeur of Brahms’ much-loved First Symphony gives way to the solo virtuosity of Britten’s Cello Suite excerpts.

This performance will finish at approximately 9.30pm
Supported by the Festival’s Ensemble and Principal Players
Presented in association with IMG

For more information about the festival please visit their website.

Friday 11th May - NNF Britten Sinfonia

Mark Padmore tenor
Jacqueline Shave leader/director

Webern Five Movements Op.5
Schubert arr. Webern Lieder
Mahler Rückert-Lieder
Schubert Symphony No. 5

Britten Sinfonia and Mark Padmore mine the rich seam of Viennese music in this evening of diverse works by composers from the Austrian capital. Moving from the glimmering joie de vivre of Schubert’s German Dances to the breadth and eloquence of Mahler’s captivating Rückert-Lieder and the chamber-scale intimacies of Webern’s Five Movements for String Quartet, the programme showcases the astonishing versatility of Britten Sinfonia and the communicative brilliance of one of our leading tenors.

Pre-concert talk with Mark Padmore and Patrick Dickie at 6.15pm. Free to ticket holders

This performance will finish at approximately 9.30pm.

For more information about the festival please visit their website.

Sam Swallow Rinse it Out
Osvaldo Pugliese (arr. Watson) Recuerdo
Bernstein (arr. Farrington) Symphonic Dances from West Side Story
Lennon (arr. Oliver Weeks) Jealous Guy

Love imperiled, love broken, love betrayed; Aurora Orchestra presents an electrifying combination of music and dance inspired by the darker side of desire. Ranging from Mahler’s last anguished symphonic utterance to the crystallised grief of Dido’s Lament, this visceral programme also features jealousy-fuelled tango, songs by John Lennon and singer/songwriter Sam Swallow, and a virtuosic new arrangement of the Symphonic Dances from Bernstein’s West Side Story.

Wednesday 23rd May - NNF Spira mirabilis

Beethoven Symphony No 6, ‘Pastoral’

Spira mirabilis continues its acclaimed exploration of Beethoven’s symphonies with a performance of the lyrical Sixth Symphony that promises to spike the sublime score with the ensemble’s unique blend of vivacity and virtuosity.

Spira mirabilis embodies the vitality, intensity and excitement of great classical music. Performing without a conductor, the group brings a new edge of spontaneity and immediacy to the large-scale orchestral repertoire.

The concert will be introduced from the stage; afterwards, the group will gather with the audience to answer questions about their unique style of music-making.

For more information about the festival please visit their website.

Saturday 26th May - NNF Festival Chorus and London Philharmonic Orchestra

David Parry conductor
Fflur Wyn soprano
to be announced mezzo-soprano
Norfolk & Norwich Festival Chorus

Debussy Nocturnes
Elgar Sea Pictures
Poulenc Gloria

Elgar’s Sea Pictures is coming home – its world première was at the Norfolk & Norwich Festival in 1899. These ever-popular songs are by turns soothing, yearning and tempestuous. Debussy’s three Nocturnes marvellously convey impressions of light, from the shifting shadows of clouds to the spark and glow of festive illuminations and the glimmer of a moonlit sea.

Poulenc’s Gloria is a stirring work for soprano, chorus and orchestra, and one of the best-loved of all 20th-century scores. It closes this thrilling programme on a glittering high note.
