Wednesday 9th May - NNF Berlin Symphony OrchestraJulian Lloyd Webber cello
Alexander Liebreich conductor
Weber Overture, Der Freischütz
Haydn Cello Concerto in C major
Britten Serenata & Marcia from Cello Suite No.1
Beethoven Coriolan Overture
Brahms Symphony No.1 The 2012 Festival opens on a glittering note with a visit by one of Europe’s most distinguished orchestras. The Berlin Symphony Orchestra is joined by the cellist Julian Lloyd Webber for a concert of contrasts: the programme ranges from 18th-century poise to 20th-century intimacy, encompassing the expansive vision of two great symphonic masters and a Romantic visionary along the way.
Der Freischütz and Coriolan overtures are galvanising and full of drama, a satisfying contrast to Haydn’s gossamer scoring. And the grandeur of Brahms’ much-loved First Symphony gives way to the solo virtuosity of Britten’s Cello Suite excerpts.
This performance will finish at approximately 9.30pm
Supported by the Festival’s Ensemble and Principal Players
Presented in association with IMG
